The helpful use of the feet

Building on the technique of using foot rollers presented in the mini-subscription ‘Phrasing’, further possible uses of the feet are discussed and developed. The feet can be used in different ways, walking, tapping, stamping or rolling, standing or sitting. When and how it makes sense to use the feet in which way will be the main focus in the workshops. They are aimed at practitioners and/or teachers and are practical workshops. The specific topics selected will depend on the interests of the participants. Example topics are:

  • Creating musical phrases (all instruments) – deepening
  • Rhythmic stability (all instruments) – deepening
  • Coordination (all instruments) – deepening
  • Fluency and evenness (all instruments)
  • Position changes (high strings)
  • Playing together with others (all instruments)
  • Vibrato (high strings)

Find out more about footwork on our topic page.

Prerequisite for participation

  1. Participants have worked through the mini-subscription ‘Phrasing’ and already know the basics of foot roller technique. The skills acquired there form the common basis of the workshop.
  2. Participants have access to their instrument and a passage from a piece that they would like to work on. It is not essential to play directly in front of the camera (with sound), but it can help us to provide more specific feedback. The passages/pieces (preferably one slow and one fast section) should be sent to us before the workshop (a scan or photo of the relevant page by email is sufficient).
  3. In order to benefit fully from the programme, we recommend having at least 1 foot roller ready to hand. 2 foot rollers would be better. Foot rollers also become part of the footwork.
  4. Active participation and willingness to be online with audio and video.
