In this mini-subscription, we use the piano as an example to demonstrate a method to develop musical phrases by literally feeling them. For all instruments.
Musical phrases are at their most convincing when the musician “feels” the shape of the phrase, when the tempo remains organic and variations are seamlessly integrated into the musical flow. All these challenges are addressed by this mini-subscription. We demonstrate the method on the piano, and in the last section of this course you will develop a musical phrase on your own. All exercises are easy to follow and explore. We also provide guidance on how to adapt the information to other instrument groups.
This mini-subscription is perfect for you…
This mini-subscription is not about “good” or “bad” phrases. Instead, we are providing a tool to shape musical phrases according to your personal preferences.
Steps 1–3 described in the mini-subscription also form the basis of the foot roller method. You can apply this to all pieces, passages, scales and arpeggios to improve coordination, rhythmic stability and precision. By adding the fourth step, you can then shape the musical phrases.
We recommend using foot rollers for this course, as they provide the greatest benefit. If you can’t imagine using foot rollers at all, then give it a go without them. The course includes guidance on how best to proceed in that case. A selection of recommended foot rollers is available in the ema Music Shop, though any other type of roller can be used.
